A compressor mounting space can look ideal until you ask where its intake will draw air and how you will reach the filter later. Access matters particularly when mud or dusty travel is part of the vehicle's use.

Choose the compressor location as a complete installation. The bracket, wiring, cooling space and intake arrangement need to work together.

Quick answer

Keep the intake filter installed as specified and choose a location allowed by the compressor manufacturer. Use only an approved relocation arrangement with the correct fittings and routing; moving the filter higher does not make a compressor or vehicle safe to submerge.

Identify the compressor first

Record the model and its intended use before planning the mount. A compact locker compressor and a tyre-inflation compressor do not have identical duties.

The related ARB Compact, ARB Single and TRE units are different equipment choices. Confirm the required function, voltage and installation instructions rather than infer capability from external size.

Look at contamination exposure

Inspect the proposed space for splash paths, accumulated dust and nearby sources of heat. Consider what happens after a muddy trip and how the filter can be checked without removing unrelated equipment.

ARB offers a filter relocation kit intended to move the intake to a cleaner location. Its existence illustrates an installation option for compatible equipment, not permission to use any hose or remote filter.

Retain access for maintenance

Make sure the specified filter can be inspected and serviced after the compressor is installed. Leave a practical route for hands and tools, consistent with the instructions.

As a planning exercise, ask the installer to show the filter-service access before signing off the installation. A visible filter that cannot be removed is not a useful maintenance arrangement.

Check any relocation route

For an approved kit, follow its tube length, fitting, mounting and routing requirements. Protect the route from rubbing and from becoming pinched by other parts.

Do not improvise a long small-bore tube, omit the filter or use an unapproved material to reach a convenient location. Confirm compatibility with the actual compressor model and kit supplier.

Separate the intake from cooling

An intake extension does not provide cooling airflow around the motor or compressor body. Preserve both the intake requirements and the mounting clearances described by the manufacturer.

If a cabinet or cover is being added, have its effect reviewed before use. Do not assume a filter relocation cures all issues created by enclosing the compressor.

Document the installation

Keep photos of the filter location and route, the compressor and relocation-kit part numbers, and the instructions used. After contamination exposure, inspect and service as those documents require.
