The vehicle may be recovered, but the operation is not complete until the rope, hook and controls are safely prepared for travelling. Rushing the last short length creates an avoidable pinch point.

Agree the storage procedure before the recovery starts. The approved arrangement depends on the winch, hook, bumper and any matching storage accessory.

Quick answer

Follow the winch's final-spooling procedure, use the specified hook strap and keep hands clear of the fairlead. Stop before the hook reaches the opening and use the approved storage arrangement. Do not use powered tension to force an incompatible hook or accessory into place.

Read the storage procedure first

Locate the final-spooling section in your winch instructions and identify the specified hook, strap and storage point. Record any additional accessory and its own instructions.

WARN's operator documentation separates the final storage steps from loaded winching. Model-specific distances and methods should not be copied onto an unrelated Ironman or TRE winch.

Keep the operator in control

Maintain clear communication during final spooling. The person using the control needs an unobstructed view of the rope path and a reliable stop signal.

Keep other people away from the moving line and opening. Do not rely on a shouted warning after the hook is already close to the fairlead.

Keep hands outside the pinch point

Use the supplied or approved hook strap as instructed, keeping hands clear of rope, hook and fairlead. Do not hold the hook directly while the winch draws it towards the opening.

WARN's synthetic-rope instructions emphasise this separation. A glove does not make it safe to place a hand beside a moving fairlead or drum.

Use the approved storage arrangement

Stop and arrange the hook as described in the relevant instructions. Confirm that a hook holder or storage accessory is suitable for the exact hook and fairlead combination.

Do not pull a hook through the opening, clamp an unapproved attachment with the winch or use excess tension to stop a rattle. Seek supplier advice if the supplied arrangement does not fit the installed bumper.

Prepare for the journey

Check that the stored rope and hook cannot become loose or obstruct vehicle equipment. Follow the instructions for disconnecting the remote and isolating the winch system for travelling.

If powered controls behave unexpectedly, take the system out of use and obtain support. Do not leave an unresolved control issue armed while driving.

Make a repeatable departure check

Record your vehicle's approved storage position with a photograph taken after the system is safe. Keep this beside the operating instructions so another trained operator can identify the correct arrangement.

For a matching hook-storage accessory or winch configuration enquiry, send OFM4x4.co.uk the winch, hook and fairlead details together with a clear bumper photograph.
