An anchor is part of the recovery system, not just a convenient place to attach a hook. The strap's purpose, rating and route around the tree all matter.
The quick answer
Use an appropriate rated tree protector with the winch manufacturer's approved rigging method and a suitable anchor. Keep people clear of the tensioned line and stop if the tree or attachment is uncertain.
Assess the anchor
A tree's size alone does not prove it can carry a recovery load. Look at its condition, roots, ground and pull direction. If there is doubt, choose another recovery plan rather than test the anchor under tension.
Choose the right strap
A tree protector spreads the contact around the trunk and provides a suitable attachment arrangement. A kinetic recovery strap is designed to stretch and must not be substituted for a static winching anchor in WARN's guidance. Check labels and current instructions.
Inspect the connections
Use compatible rated shackles or soft-shackle arrangements as the component maker specifies. Check that no strap bears on a sharp edge and that the line direction will not roll hardware against the tree. Never hook the winch rope back onto itself unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.
Manage the pull
Agree a stop signal, place a damper where instructed and keep everyone out of the risk zone. Pause if the anchor moves, the strap creeps or the line angle changes. Remove all rigging and inspect it after the recovery.
Specification checklist
Before ordering or booking work, have these details ready: Winch manual, protector label and rating, connectors, anchor condition and intended pull direction.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a snatch strap as a tree protector?
Do not assume so. WARN specifically separates stretching recovery straps from winching equipment; follow the exact product instructions.
For an application check, contact OFM4x4.co.uk with the vehicle and component details above. Confirm the current fitting instructions for the exact product before work starts.
