New discs and pads need a controlled commissioning period after installation. A long motorway drive with little braking does not reproduce the manufacturer's bedding procedure.

The quick answer

Have a qualified installer fit and inspect the brakes, then follow the exact pad and rotor manufacturer's bedding instructions in a safe location. Do not assume one routine suits every friction compound.

Start with fitment and cleanliness

Confirm the rotor and pad application, hardware, caliper movement and hub condition before the road test. The contact faces must be treated according to whether the rotor is uncoated or has a protective coating.

Build heat progressively

DBA describes a series of moderate decelerations and cooling intervals for its own pad and rotor combination. The purpose is to establish an even working surface without an early excessive heat event. Use the procedure supplied with the actual components.

Allow a cooling phase

Avoid holding the vehicle stationary on hot brakes immediately after a hard stop, where the instructions caution against it. A normal drive with limited brake demand can provide a gradual cool-down. Never perform a bedding routine where traffic conditions make it unsafe.

Investigate poor results

Pulling, judder, noise or unusual pedal feel deserves inspection, not repeated aggressive bedding. Record the fitted part numbers and the circumstances when symptoms appear. Rotor deposits, hub runout and installation faults need different remedies.

Specification checklist

Before ordering or booking work, have these details ready: Vehicle variant, front and rear part numbers, coating type, pad compound, and the exact manufacturer procedure used.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bed in brakes on a public road?

Only where the procedure can be carried out legally and safely; an installer should choose suitable conditions and road-test the result.
