A fairlead is part of the rope path, not simply a front-bumper trim piece. Its type, condition and position can affect how the rope reaches the drum.
Before changing rope or a fairlead, identify the entire combination. A matching bolt spacing alone does not establish compatibility with the rope, winch and bumper.
Use the fairlead type approved for the actual winch and rope. WARN's truck-winching guidance specifies suitable smooth hawse fairleads for its synthetic conversions and warns about damage left by wire rope. Check the exact manufacturer's combination rather than generalise across every winch.
Identify all three components
Record the winch model, rope specification and existing fairlead part number or type. Include the bumper and any mounting adaptor in the enquiry.
The related Ironman winches include synthetic and wire configurations. They illustrate why the complete assembly matters; the rope and fairlead must be selected against the actual model instructions.
Check the rope path
Have the fitter inspect the alignment between fairlead, bumper opening and drum. The rope should not encounter an unapproved edge or obstruction in the intended arrangement.
Do not treat a wide-looking opening as proof of suitable alignment. A fairlead that bolts on can still be misplaced relative to the bumper or winch mount.
Review a wire-to-synthetic change
WARN notes that wire rope can leave damage on a previously used guide and specifies a new suitable hawse fairlead for its relevant synthetic conversions.
Confirm the rope's diameter, length, rating, drum attachment and heat-related requirements with the winch manufacturer as well. Changing only the visible guide does not validate the entire conversion.
Inspect condition before use
Check for damaged surfaces, sharp edges, loose mounting or abnormal roller movement where rollers are part of the approved design. Follow the fairlead and winch inspection instructions.
If the rope path has damage, take the equipment out of use pending assessment. Do not assume polishing away a mark restores the original profile or strength.
Use the specified hardware
Confirm mounting hole spacing, bolt specification, orientation and installation torque. Include the bumper's instructions where the mount is part of it.
Avoid drilling, stacking improvised spacers or making a new opening without supplier approval. These changes affect the installed arrangement beyond simply replacing a part.

Get a fitment answer before ordering
Send clear photos of the current fairlead and bumper opening, along with the winch model and proposed rope. Keep your enquiry focused on the complete configuration.
OFM4x4.co.uk can help identify a suitable equipment option when those details are available. Installation and conversion work should follow the relevant manufacturer documentation.
