Putting a camping fridge away straight after a trip can leave spills, frost and moisture inside. The next journey is a poor time to discover that the cabinet needs cleaning or a seal has been damaged.
A controlled end-of-trip routine is easier than an aggressive clean later. Follow the instructions for the actual fridge, including its approved cleaning products and storage arrangement.
Move contents to suitable cooling, switch off and isolate the fridge as instructed, then allow frost to melt naturally. Do not chip ice with sharp tools or wash electrical equipment under running water. Dry the cabinet and follow the model's instructions for storage.
Plan before switching off
Arrange another suitable place for temperature-sensitive contents before starting. Empty baskets and compartments so the whole cabinet can be checked.
Keep the fridge model and manual to hand. A drain plug or removable compartment on another brand does not mean your fridge can be cleaned in the same way.
Defrost without force
Dometic's CFX3 support instructions describe removing contents, switching off, opening the lid and allowing ice to melt before wiping away water. They explicitly warn against hard or pointed tools.
Use this as an example of a controlled procedure, then follow your own fridge's instructions. Do not scrape a frozen item loose or introduce an unapproved heating method.
Clean the cabinet gently
Dometic's cleaning guidance uses a damp cloth and warns against abrasive tools and running-water washing. Confirm which cleaning agents your manufacturer permits.
Work carefully around seams and controls, keeping plugs and electrical housings dry. Remove loose baskets for separate cleaning only where the instructions allow it.
Inspect seals and vents
Check the lid seal for debris, displaced sections or damage without pulling it apart. Confirm that the external ventilation openings are clear using the approved maintenance method.
If a seal or latch needs replacement, identify the exact part rather than reshape it with an improvised tool. Photographs and the model label will make a support enquiry more useful.
Store the complete system properly
Dry the cabinet and removable parts, then follow the instructions for lid position during storage. Keep cables identified and protected so they are not crushed beneath other equipment.
A separate leisure battery has its own storage and charging requirements. Follow its manual independently; storing the fridge does not automatically isolate or maintain the battery installation.
| Stage | Useful check |
|---|---|
| Before defrost | Contents moved to suitable cooling |
| After cleaning | Cabinet dry; seals and vents inspected |
| Storage | Fridge and battery instructions followed separately |
| Restart | Operation tested before departure |
Check before the next trip
Inspect the cable and cabinet, reconnect according to the manual and test operation before loading the vehicle. Record any error or abnormal connector heating and resolve it before departure.
